    When a rail accident with a fatality is reported, Railpage staff will start a new sticky thread inside the relevant forum. If a thread longer than 25 informative posts without needing excessive moderation exists on the incident, it will be cleaned up as per the rules of this policy and adopted as the official discussion thread on the incident. There will only be one thread per incident. By posting in the thread, users will automatically agree to the rules of the Fatality Policy, which will be inserted in the first post of the thread. Only informative discussion related to the incident will be allowed. The following types of posts will be deleted:
    • Condolences posts
    • Unsubstantiated accusations ("finger-pointing")
    • Reminding others of the rules - we have moderators for that! If a message is posted where the main topic of the post is in the above list, it will be deleted by Railpage staff, and the author warned.
    Any misbehavior in a fatality thread carries a heavier warning. Warning levels will be issued at the staff member’s discretion. The Fatality Policy carries a three-strike clause with it. If a flame-war or anything remotely resembling one breaks out three times in that thread, it will be locked for three days. After that, it'll be unlocked and the flame-war counter reset to zero. Users involved will be warned accordingly. The strike count will be included in the threadstarter. Discussion may be terminated without warning at the choosing of RP Management at any time.

    Breaking now from the CFA radio not sure if a hoax call but 5 carriages involved, 1 almost on its side and the driver trapped with a diesel spill, also reports of serious injuries.  Near the BP station north of Wallan.

    Vline have a travel alert.  Possibly the XPT??  Police on scene

    8:11PM - CFA confirm it is the XPT and 2 carriages derailed with injuries.
    8:16PM - Mass Casualty situation declared by the CFA.
    8:25PM - 2 trapped in the loco no further entrapments.  4 carriage derailed.  Air Ambulance sending 3 choppers.

    Service update - Seymour lineDue to an investigation with NSW Train Link Service near Wallan. All Seymour and Shepparton services are not to depart Southern Cross Station until further notice. Service updates to follow as information is available. [20:01 20/02]

    Thanks Dennis Walter just said on 3AW train derailment at Wallan but no further info.   I will update as I hear more.

    No mention on NSW Trainlink incident sites. Sure its not a hoax/

    Not a hoax.  CFA have 21 vehicles on scene.  Train was going from Sydney to Melbourne according to 3AW listener who had a relative on scene.

    Location: Melton, where the sparks dare not roam!
    Leading power car is on its side in the dirt. 5 cars in total off the rails from what I've heard.

    All Seymour line services suspended. Not likely to be running in the morning either, the track will be stuffed, Broad Gauge may not be damaged, but the line will likely be suspended for the clean up.

    This is a big mess. I hope everybody is OK.

    It looks like the train derailed at the north end points at Wallan Loop.
    The main line doesn't look too bad.
    Once they've moved the XPT they could straight rail through the points at the north end of the loop.
    That would reopen the line and they could in longer term reopen the loop.

    this was posted on Twitter from vline-Seymour line today at 12:45.

    The 12:45 Albury - Southern Cross service will be delayed by approximately 70 minutes due to an ongoing rail equipment fault near Wallan.

    In fact quite a few posts all day about rail equipment fault near Wallan

    From the photos, it appears that the derailment occurred in the loop.  Does anyone know if this is so?

    The photos show four tracks at the derailment location.
    The loop (the most easterly track) which has been damaged, and the the standard gauge main line which looks pretty much OK, although one imagines the north end points are damaged. There are the two broad gauge tracks, which have different rail fasteners to the standard gauge and appear undamaged.

    I was going to make that same observation, that this didn’t ‘happen’ on the main line - by that I mean it looks like the current placement of the train is the loop. It also looks like a decent speed accident, it must have been terrifying. I was only trying to convince my wife to take an XPT trip to Melbourne from Sydney a couple of days ago, after this she’s not going to be too keen to ride it for a while.

    After the accident Leon, who has experience in rail transport, said he walked back to where he thought the train had derailed.

    He said the tracks, which police said were badly damaged following the crash, were set to divert the train onto an adjacent parallel side track. Leon said signals should have alerted the driver to slow down to be able to move into the side track, but he did not notice the train slowing prior to the derailment.


    "If the driver knew that, and the signalling told him that, there's no way he would have been travelling at the speed he was travelling at," Leon said.

    "You have to slow down at that point ... And this train didn't."
    Passengers said they felt a sharp bump before the train derailed.

    Does that mean the points were set for the train to go into the loop?

    I've removed a bunch more posts here that were generally irrelevant, and given this is the second crewing fatality in as many months, will be taking the same approach as I am in the Jumperkine thread.

    It is well known the media are generally clueless when it comes to specialised topics and I am not going to have speculation on RP presented as fact by some idiot reporter.

    Any speculation beyond what is reported in the media will be deleted, no ifs buts or maybes.

    RTBU now having a voice



    Any truth?  For sure any maintenance issues and funding of the network if at fault here will most definitely come out.  The RTBU also appear to suggest the Vic Government has cut funding in rail maintenance can this be comfirmed?

    I think that the RTBU's comments may be very relevant given that according the the last WON issued, Wallan loop was supposed to be booked out and the points padlocked set for the main whilst repairs caused by a recent control box fire are carried out.  Train Authority working is currently in working between Kilmore East and Donnybrook as the CTC (or whatever it is called these days) is  inoperable.  Drivers have also been instructed to ignore signal aspects.  It was because of the Train Authority working that there was also the tragic death of the pilot as well as the driver.

    Passenger on earlier service had the following to say
    ‘BLUE MURDER’ TRIP FOR EARLIER PASSENGERS A retired rail worker who was on a Sydney-Melbourne train ahead of the service that derailed said their trip was so rough he was “frightened” and he feared it would go off the tracks. Merv Bartlett, a retired station master who worked for 40 years in the rail industry was travelling on the overnight train with his wife. “There were at least 20 times when the train (the one he was travelling on) hit what we call ‘a hole in the road’.” Mr Bartlett described “a hole in the road” as a depression where the track is not level and smooth. “A couple of times I thought, we’re in trouble here. I was quite frightened, to be truthful.” Mr Bartlett, from Brisbane, was travelling on the Sydney-Melbourne train with his wife. They have come to Melbourne to visit a sick relative. “When we got to Southern Cross, I got out and I walked up to the locomotive and the driver was getting out and I said to him: ‘How did you keep it on the tracks?’ “He said to me ‘We’ve got a lot of troubles’. I asked if he wanted to talk about it and he said ‘no’.” Mr Bartlett, 81, said it was the “worst trip” he’d ever experienced and that he felt dreadful for the people on the train which derailed. He said he was so concerned after his own trip, he wanted to report it but he didn’t know who to report it to. “I was going to go to the police but I didn’t know who to complain to,” he said. He and his wife were on the overnight train that got into Southern Cross Station
