I don't get emotional about this stuff, Mike, but you clearly do.

And as I've already said, I'm looking forward to lots of Labor governments - probably the water services, the motor registry and the motorways will all get privatised here in South Australia - Labor are experts are privatising everything they can get their hands on in this state and I expect them to pick up where they left off last time and look for new stuff to sell even though there's not much left. And I already told you that I'm looking forward to Albo as PM - I have the nets all ready to go to catch that wonderful helicopter money. Josh Frydenburg has accused Albo of secretly plotting to bring in high taxes on family trusts and curb other forms of tax shelters.

Good - it's about time someone came up with a plan to start paying back this massive pile of debt we've accumulated... Shorten had the same plan at the last election but it was scuttled after they lost along with the negative gearing and 'free' share imputation money plans.

They were actually quite reasonable and well-thought out tax changes by Labor that would have clawed back some of the money needed to pay for services and infrastructure. We can't keep living on borrowed money - something has to give. The LNP also need to start telling us how they intend to pay off this huge pile of debt we've been accumulating.

You're pushing against a very strong group of vested interests in people who want to keep housing completely un-affordable. They don't look at it like that but that's the reality. In that corner you have:

• Retirees, pensioners, anyone who has assets vested in residential real estate such as small time (or even big-time) residential landlords. Rents are making good returns comparatively speaking at the moment but its the capital gains that they're really after.
• Banks and the banking system - it's no coincidence that our banks are the most profitable institutions on the face of the planet (per capita) AND we have almost the most expensive housing in the world. The banks also have most of our politicians captive on both sides of the house.
• Real estate, insurance and all other services to housing like Boral, Bunnings, etc.
• Finally, 'mum and dad' residential property owners who feel richer when their principal place of residence goes up in value and redraw or borrow against it to increase their wealth.

In the other corner you have:

• The young and the poor, the hand-to-mouth working class.

It's pretty obvious who will win in the development of policy and in political lobbying, so I'm really not sure what can be done to at least keep housing reasonably affordable - Sydney's median house price in the greater metro area is now a million bucks so if you're young and you don't have family money then you really should leave unless you can make good six-figures - which isn't most people.

I don't know what the answer is - that's my honest assessment. I can guess at what might happen is all... Both sides of the house have been looking at allowing first-homebuyers to withdraw (say) 50 or 80 thousand from their superannuation to put towards a first home purchase but frankly that's not really fixing the problem of affordability - in fact really that's going to tip petrol on the fire.

Interest rates are almost certainly going up this year as I've been saying for a while now - the average Sydney mortgage for someone starting out is $700,000. At 2.9% (which is the current variable with the Big Four) your repayments will be $2,800 per month but if we take that to 6% which is close to the historical average then your repayments rocket to $4,200 per month. That would break a lot of people, no doubt - not the best way to rein in prices but the market might sort it out eventually if there's a rapid succession of rises.

Who is we? The only people screwing anyone (as far as housing goes) is those selling homes for more than they are worth. Don't want to be screwed? Don't entertain the idea of buying from them. (That leaves me out, I last sold a house 22 years ago and I sold it at a loss. I could argue that I got screwed.)

My brother is looking to buy his first home at age 62. He has a budget of under $100,000. He has found several possible candidates, granted none of them are particularly special, all of them need a good spruce up to be even livable, but they are there. People entering the market need to be prepared to buy in a market they can afford, put up with a lower standard than their dream home, and be prepared to put in a bit of effort. It's what we all did in the 1970s when we bought our first home.

I remember back in the 1960s (when I was at school) the average Australian family had very little, their homes were little more than shacks, but there was always a near new car in the yard (just one, not one per family member). Having a good reliable vehicle was top priority over having a flash home, it was an absolute necessity. You could buy a new car under $2k. Fuel was about $0.0925 per litre. None of them cared about the "sub-standard" housing, they made do. 2 or 3 kids per bedroom. $32k would have bought what many would have considered to be a mansion in Brisbane at that time. Very, very few could afford that.

There are many, many homes for sale in this country at prices considerably less than what it would cost to rebuild them (insured value). It could be argued that these vendors are getting screwed.

It's only buyers who insist on buying a home in certain areas that are being screwed, and they can only blame themselves.

I know what would have passed the pub test...and the representative from SA would have been thrown out of the Public bar for saying these comments... "So he was wrong for being honest about not being a professional fire-fighter", in ScoMo trying to capitalise on a photo op when he had just been caught out on a beach in Hawaii when those victims of the fires were at their most vulnerable and trying to patch up that mess, which he later agreed was a very bad look.
