Locomotives and Rollingstock on your Workbench

Toxation,

The cylinders appear to be white simply because they are unpainted. As yet i haven't had time to paint the underframe, wheels, cylinders, etc.

I use the SEM etch primers and i am very happy with the results.

My mix is 1 part etch grey, 3 parts etch black, and 4 parts metho, mixed so the consistency of the paint is similar to low fat milk. I'm currently using a Badger airbrush.

Hope this helps.

sorry, my last post wasnt for toxation. It was for dave. So...

Dave: Did you put any extra weight in the tender of your d3?

No extra weight in the tender - i didn't think of it at the time i built it but with the benefit of hindsight it probably would be beneficial. What i will probably do is stick a chunk of lead in the coal space underneath the coal, as well as in the boiler of the engine unit.

The tender and its bogies have caused me no end of grief. I'm looking forward to the SEM J class with acetal bogies so i don't have to build them.

Cheers

Really? Mine came together really easy.

I suppose it is a pain in the smeg to get the fold right and srew in the axle boxes to the frame.

Presenting the VR K class. I need to buy the etch primers from SEM, but from what Dave's results have shown, the outcome will be quite good.

I purchased 2 of Lloyds DL class loco kits at the Newcastle Exhibition last weekend for $150 each!  Shocked

Both are now built and running. Just waiting to make a trip to Wagga Wagga to pick up the paint for them and will hopefully then have them completed.

My plan is to paint one in AN Green and number as DL45. The other DL will most likely be painted in the new PacNat livery.

For a loco kit, I was impressed with the simplicity of assembling the kit!

On the weathering bench - three Trainorama 44's, an Austrains C, two 421's and two 80's

On the construction bench - 8 OCX's, 4 CCX's and 4 GLX's and a Lloyds 49

On the superdetail bench - an AR Kits 45 class

On the rebuild bench - three Powerline 48's

The back-log of work will be cleared a lot faster when I can get a compressor to use with the air-brush.

How did you get them so cheap? Is Lloyd have a sale and discounting everything to get rid of it?

Nick,

I would say they were exhibition specials.
AN's were also going for $149.95
49's and 82's going for $179.95

ShockedShockedShocked

Those wanting a bargain, I would suggest heading for the Sydney exhibition at Hurstville as I would assume he will have them on special again.

Unfortunately I won't be there this year, Bathurst 1000 calls!

I haven't decided as to whether I should weather it yet...

Dave, what did you use to weather your D3? And how did you apply it?

James,

Whats the story with the roof and floor in styrene with that van ?

The default SEM roof is too thick, therefore I used .010 styrene sheet for the roof. The underframe is also scratchbuilt as the default SEM underframe isn't an accurate representation of a U van underframe.

BTW, this is a narrow door U van kitbashed from two normal U van kits.

I just added the following to my 'need to build' list:

8 x WHX/NGAX Grain hoppers
2 x GLV/NGLV Louvre Vans
2 x PRY/NPRY Cement hoppers
3 x NQIW Container wagons
2 x NQVX Flexivan Wagon
1 x TRC/NRTA Van
4 x WTY/NGTY Grain hoppers

Currently on the workbench is a Footplate 38, which is my first whitemetal kit too. I'm liking it very much, just wish i had the money to get more w/m kits.

I've got Lloyd's 3 car 900 class on my workbench. First attempt at building a Lloyds kit, I've previously had some success with building silvermaz RUB cars and AR Kits BCHs and BBWs, but my painting needs help and my decalling is WOEFUL. I now have an airbrush which I hope will solve part of that.
  Termite Chief Commissioner

Tonight I've painted;

4 BBW's into Gunmetal grey, now to get some new decals for them.
2 old-version Trainorama VLCX's into Freight Australia livery

I have also undercoated;
1 Austrains NR for repainting
1 SFS RUB car
1 Hanovale NZBF ballast plough

Tomorrow I pick up my 4 car Xplorer from a mate who has been building, painting, detailing and weathering it for me for the last 2 years and my model of 4904!  Wink

With the finishing of the BBW's, my ballast set will be upto 8 wagons, another 4-7 wagons plus plough and it will be quite a respectable looking block train!

The Budd car is finished but for some snappy NSWGR decals and some proper horns.  One FO is complete with the other nearing completion.  The old plastic wheels are not up to scratch though, so Ill be headin to Fishers with a bogie to see if theres anything suitable there.  A footplate Z13 is a recent arrival and looks like its going to be a summer project, the intention being to do it as 1301 is or was when last operational.  Plus there are those Lloyds white metal kits lying around.  Now if only I could find the %$^! instructions.....

http://www.lloydsmodelrail.com.au - instructions are there for some kits.

My 900 is coming along nicely. Need to get a decoder for it, and some alligator clips for a test run. Still deciding where to put the motor - at the moment its in the HPF but I'm considering putting it in the middle car - so I can get equal performance in both directions (and the drawback is an equal number of derailments)

The easy bits are out of the way. Next have to do the bogie sideframes, carriage connectors (which will move with the train), horns, vents, couplers, handrails, grills, body supports etc etc etc. I think I might do a little painting as well.
