V Line EMD-powered loco C506 leads Australian National ALCos 841/705 on train 3MA5 as they are about to enter Shepherds Hill Road tunnel in the Adelaide suburbs nearing journey's end on 16 November 1994.
The crossovers were to allow bi-directional working during trackwork in the lead up to gauge conversion in May 1995.
Today the track on the left remains broad gauge (1600mm) and is used by suburban railcars between Adelaide and Belair, while the right hand track is now standard gauge and used by inter and intrastate freight services.
