Heritage Express ran their annual steam hauled special from Sydney to Katoomba for the Katoomba Winter Magic Festival on Saturday, June 22nd. The train was hauled by 3642, with diesels 4520 and 4490 on the rear of the train to assist with the load when required.
Unusually, the special picked up passengers at Liverpool, Westmead and Penrith instead of running into/out of Sydney Terminal. This decision was made due to very limited pathing between Granville and Central due to trackwork, complicated with additional CityRail electric services operating to/from Katoomba further reducing the number of paths available.
3642 tackled the steep grades of The Blue Mountains with traditional enthusiasm, the steady beat of the locomotive could be heard for minutes both before and after the locomotive passed most of the photospots. The train is seen here ascending the grade from Glenbrook Tunnel, approaching Glenbrook Station.
