The South Australian Railways took delivery of 44 ALCo DL531 units between 1960 and 1966, manufactured by AE Goodwin of Sydney. A 45th unit was purchased secondhand from the Silverton Tramway in 1970.
The 830 class operated on all three gauges, narrow, standard and broad, all eventually passing into the ownership of Australian National Railways. Three of the class carried this short-lived livery based on the former Commonwealth Railways colours as exemplified by 862 at Dry creek North on 9 January 1983.
At the beginning of 2016 only about a third of the class remain in service (some rebuilt and reclassified.)
