Australia's various State government owned railways had to be dragged kicking and screaming to initiate cross border operation, or 'through working', of their locomotives between their systems. On the Adelaide to Melbourne route this did not become fully implemented until the mid 1980s. Thankfully things have changed considerably since then. A pair of Australian National ALCo single-enders share the 'ready line' at Dynon depot in Melbourne with a variety of home-town V/Line motive power - 6 August 1989.
