As there is no crew compartment at the no1 end of the car, the shunter directs the driver of the shunting movement by radio to ensure that the four "S" Set motor cars are amalgamated into one set for return to Flemington Maintenance Centre. This scene itself is not unusual, as such moves are done at Maintenance centres on occasion when sets are remarshaled, although it is very unusual to see it done at Sydney Terminal!
Over the first week of August, 2013, the AK Track Recording Cars made one of their last runs around the Sydney metropolitan rail network. To remove the requirement to use diesel locomotives in the underground (City Circle, Eastern Suburbs, New Southern Railway and Epping to Chatswood Rail Link), trials had previously been conducted using surplus suburban electric rolling stock. Over the week, the AK Cars were operated with two suburban electric motor cars bracketing the set of three track recording vehicles. The consist was C3063/C3982/AKCars/C3044/C3949, with the motor cars at each end marshaled "elephant style".
