SHOCKED train passengers have told how they felt a sudden jolt and heard a bang as the Kuranda train broke in two.
The Kuranda Scenic Railway train was about 16km from Cairns when a coupling between carriages two and three broke, leaving the passengers stranded on the line in thick scrub on Saturday.
"We heard a loud noise and there was a sudden jolt and then the emergency brakes kicked in and the whole thing just stopped," Cairns man David Kuzio, who was in carriage four, said yesterday.

Due to a fire in a wheat silo near Cootamundra Station, CountryLink has suspended XPT Services on the Main South Rail Line.
This morning’s XPT trains from Melbourne and Sydney are both affected, with the South-bound XPT being held at Harden and the North bound XPT stopped at Junee.
A bus operation has been put in place to transfer South-bound customers to the XPT which is stopped and Junee, and North bound customers to the train stopped at Harden. Once the coach transfer is completed customers will continue their journey via rail, but delays of up to three hours are expected.

The 26-car Interail was travelling from Brisbane to Melbourne when the locomotives came off the tracks at Sefton Junction about 10.45pm (AEDT) yesterday, a CityRail spokesman said.
