Rain brings rail pain

Sydney's dam catchment's received only light falls of rain last night, but some train commuters faced delays this morning after the South Coast got a bucketing.

Cronulla topped Sydney's rain table with 48mm, Parramatta had 39mm, the city received 29mm and Turramurra got 36mm, the Bureau of Meteorology said.

The rainfall petered out across the city's west, bureau technical officer Derek Coales said.

Walhalla Goldfields Railway is in dire financial trouble following bushfires. The railway is in danger of closing down unless much needed funding is forthcoming. There is a major fundraising model railway expo at Sandown Race Track this long weekend. Please support this event or tell your friends about it. Walhalla and Dandenong Hospital need all the help they can get.

GRAFFITI vandals were responsible for the cancellation of seven train services last month.
Another 29 trains were cancelled because of other vandalism, includeing smashed windows and damage to train interiors, Connex says. Vandals are costing the private rail operator $6 million a year.

Swindon to Kemble

Those interested in UK rail travel will be pleased to learn that the single track between Swindon and Kemble is to be re double tracked. The contracts are being signed, and the work will begin in the autumn of 2008.
