V/Line train services have been disrupted after heavy rains caused damage to the Bairnsdale to Melbourne rail track near Darnum.
V/Line passengers have been forced to travel part or all of their journey between Bairnsdale and Melbourne by bus after the sinkhole was reported near Darnum by a train driver.
V/Line is concerned the sinkhole could pose a safety risk for passengers.
The sinkhole is on the railway embankment next to the train track.
"It's a big whole that's opened up next to the track," V/Line spokesman James Kelly told ABC Mornings program.
"It's next to the railway line but not directly affecting it. The concern is it could affect the stability of the track if we have trains running over it... It's purely a safety precaution but one we have to take very seriously."
The area has experienced drainage issues before.
Peak rains continue to run on a nearby a single track.
But trains outside of peak hours are being replaces with bus services.
V/Line says the train tracks will be fixed by Thursday.
The following V/Line customer information is valid until Friday 6 July.
A bus will replace the 08:15 Traralgon to Melbourne for the entire journey between Traralgon to Yarragon.
This service will run as a train on time at 08:56 from Warragul.
The 06:45 Melbourne to Traralgon will run as a train to Warragul.
Passengers will continue the rest of the journey on buses to Traralgon.
The 17:10 Traralgon to Melbourne will run as a bus for the entire journey;
The 17:51 Traralgon to Melbourne will run as a bus for the entire journey.
The 20:45 Southern Cross to Traralgon will run a bus for the entire journey*.
Passengers at suburban stations, including Flinders Street, Richmond, Caulfield, Clayton and Dandenong are advised to catch a Metro train to either Southern Cross Station, or Pakenham to meet V/Line replacement buses.
Customers with special needs should phone V/Line on 1800 800 007 for assistance or visit the V/Line website.
