METRO has defended its decision to stop publishing online updates about train cancellations, saying travellers can find out by SMS or on display screens at stations.
Melbourne's rail operator launched a revamped website on Monday, which includes a so-called ''healthboard'' that includes live information about train delays and disruptions, both planned and unplanned.
But updates about cancelled trains have been dropped, prompting criticism that the new website contains less useful information than the old one. Rather, there is information on whether trains on each line are on schedule, delayed or suspended.
''We will continue to provide information about the impact of cancellations for our customers,'' Ms Mitchell said. ''When a service is cancelled, that constitutes a minor delay. If there is more than one cancellation on a line, or the delay is more than 15 minutes, this will be defined as a major delay and more information will be provided to explain the situation.''
But Public Transport Users Association president Daniel Bowen said the change was ''a clear reduction in the information they're providing''.
''If you've got 20 or 30 minutes between trains at some stations, like you do on some lines even in the peak, then you do need to know about individual services,'' Mr Bowen said.
''If there was a train every three to five minutes you wouldn't need to know about it but that's clearly not where we're at.''
