Victoria, 3-10 to 8-10-2004
Received an alert at 1245 this afternoon that NR48 leading 4MP5 was on fire around the 1598km mark (confirmed as 1597.950, so in the Zanthus-Coonana section, a couple of kms east of Coonana) - it had been detached from the train but the crew had used up all their extinguishers, apparently without getting the fire out.
They must have got it out eventually; trailing unit from 5PS6 (NR38) was detached, and ran light as 6CZ1 to the scene to haul MP5 to Coonana, where the locos were rearranged to have NR38 and NR95 hauling dead NR48 and MP5's loading, then they continued west, departing Parkeston at 1928, into West Kal around 1945 - where they were still standing a short while ago.
Too dark to make out any real damage to NR48's paintwork so couldn't tell how badly burnt it was - one for the Perth crowd in the morning. 5PS6 departed Coonana with NR105 solo, and is currently shunting off a fair bit of the loading at Zanthus. (via ausloco)
