Closure of Newcastle rail stations not technically a closure of whole line, State Government lawyer says
CASTLE Hill Showground users breathed a collective sigh of relief upon hearing that construction of the nearby North West Rail Link station would have minimal impact upon the community facilities.
Following consultation with Peter Gooch, president of the Hills District Agricultural Society, the government announced that the location of the station and the construction site have been moved to reduce impacts on the Showground.
Mr Gooch said he was over the moon that "this little gem" of a showground would remain largely intact.
"I'm quite surprised that in this day-and-age, politicians actually listened to the community. All credit to them," Mr Gooch said.
The station will be known as Showground following a recommendation from the Society.
Under the plan, the Hills Centre will be acquired and demolished while the council chambers may be used as a project office.
Hills Shire Mayor Michelle Byrne praised the O'Farrell government for honouring their promises.
"Relocating the station site away from the Showground to council land honours the commitment by Premier O'Farrell to preserve this important leisure precinct as a valuable community asset," she said.
"Aligning the station more closely with Carrington Rd will allow for better access to the proposed bus interchange and commuter car park, and this makes good sense for the community."
Meanwhile, the third major contract process for the rail link has begun.
Registrations will be accepted from companies with an interest in:
* Rail operators or maintainers
* Management and systems integrators
* Rail systems and signalling providers
* Rolling stock suppliers or providers,
* Equity and debt financiers
* Major civil engineering design and construction contractors
* Major station design and construction contractors
