Closure of Newcastle rail stations not technically a closure of whole line, State Government lawyer says
WOLLONDILLY Council has met with other key organisations in a bid to push the recommencement of construction on the Maldon to Dombarton rail line.
The line was partially built by the state government from 1983 to 1988 before it was abandoned because of doubts over its economic value.
Infrastructure NSW's State Infrastructure Strategy, released this month, stated the line would not be needed for another 10 years and recommended it be predominantly funded by the private sector. If completed, the line would be a major transport link between Wollondilly shire and Wollongong for freight and, hopefully, passengers.
Wollondilly Council general manager Les McMahon and Wollondilly Mayor Col Mitchell met with Wollongong Council and the Port Kembla Port Corporation to ensure plans for the line would benefit both regions.
"There are two companies, one international and one national, that are interested in it," Mr McMahon said. "The federal government put $25 million into funding a scoping study and there will be something like a construction-ready strategy."
A Wollondilly Council spokesman said early delivery of the rail link would help to reduce freight movements on key road links, including Appin and Picton roads.
The project is estimated to cost $625 million.
