Inland rail a trifecta for Toowoomba region: mayor
A NSW safety committee has stopped short of calling for a single agency to take responsibility for railway road crossings despite an average of five deaths a year in crashes between trains and motor vehicles.
The chairman of Staysafe, the state MP Paul Gibson, said such a body could prevent buckpassing between various road, rail and transport agencies which for decades has hindered safety improvements at level crossings. In a report, the parliamentary committee has called for the Ministry of Transport to oversee the state's 3800 railway crossings, although the Roads and Traffic Authority and RailCorp would continue to be involved.
