V/Line passengers drop
The number of trips taken on rural train service V/Line slumped significantly last year.
The news, contained in the country rail operator's annual report, comes after it emerged last month that V/Line failed to meet standards on each of its five lines for the month of September.
V/Line has also come under criticism from passengers confused by the rebuilding of Spencer Street Station.
Opposition transport spokesman Terry Mulder said passengers were abandoning country trains and coaches because peak-hour services were unreliable.
A V/Line spokeswoman said last night that the drop in passengers had been expected and was caused by line closures as part of work on the Regional Fast Rail network. Numbers had since returned to previous levels.
