Northern Territory Police say the freight train on the Adelaide to Darwin railway hit an abandoned car over the weekend.
Police believe the station wagon got caught up in the tracks after trying to cross the line from a dirt road just south of Alice Springs on Friday night.
The locomotive sustained minor damage with scrapes and scratches to its buffer plate as it shunted the car off the tracks.
Police have been unable to find the car's owner, but are satisfied that it was not left on the tracks deliberately.
