A proposed $100 million Government settlement with the owners of the airport railway line may not be the last public money poured into the troubled link if Sydney's late-running trains are not brought up to scratch.
The NSW Auditor-General has reported the receivers of the airport link, which has been in receivership since 2000 after failing to meet expectations, are negotiating with RailCorp for up to $98.3 million in compensation for the line's poor performance.
Sources indicated last night that any deal would require CityRail meeting agreed minimum standards for trains being on time, a tough demand after a year of persistently late trains, prompted by infrastructure problems and chronic staff shortages.
