The best way to reduce unemployment and help the Illawarra job market would be to introduce a high-speed rail service to Sydney that would chop 10 to 20 minutes off the journey.
The need to further improve transport links was raised by National Economics executive director Dr Peter Brain after the release of the Australian Local Government Association's State of the Regions report.
Mr Brain said although the Illawarra was doing quite well, it had an average travel time budget of 35 to 40 minutes and employment would benefit if that improved.
