TRAINS will run all night this New Year's Eve to avoid last year's shambles, when thousands of revellers were stranded.
A deal between the State Government and rail operator Connex will provide services through the night.
Connex spokeswoman Lea Jaensch said its proposed schedule should be approved soon.
"We're looking forward to a smooth New Year's Eve with services running all night," Ms Jaensch said.
Yarra Trams will also extend services.
Spokesman Colin Tyrus said trams would run until at least 2am, but not all night. The extended services are part of the new franchise agreements that came into effect this year.
Public Transport Users Association president Daniel Bowen said frequent, peak-style services were needed immediately after the fireworks.
Mr Bowen said trams should be extended beyond 2am.
"Trams all night would be of great benefit to those at nightspots in Fitzroy and Carlton that aren't served by trains," Mr Bowen said.
Last year, the last trains left Flinders St about 1am, leaving thousands stranded in the city and revellers rushing for available trains.
