The operator of the Darwin to Adelaide railway says it is confident a trial Shanghai to Darwin shipping service will become a permanent trade route.
The first shipment is due to arrive at Port Darwin today and Freightlink says 40 containers from the shipment will head to Adelaide by rail.
Freightlink's John Parks says other trade routes could depend on the success of this trial.
"We're also working very closely with the Northern Territory Government with other future new shipping services from different parts of Asia into Darwin and we hope to announce something in the new year on that regard," he said.
