COMMUTERS were turned away from Spencer St Station last night as builders attempt to fast-track the troubled project.
The station is now closed to suburban trains from 10pm weeknights to allow more work.
Major Projects Minister Peter Batchelor yesterday said builder Leighton Contractors wanted to close the station from 8.30pm. "(It) would have caused much greater disruption to the travelling public," Mr Batchelor said.
Exceptions to the early closure will be made for football at Telstra Dome.
Suburban train services operated by Connex will return to normal after work ceases for the Christmas break on December 17, resuming on January 24. Then the early closure will remain in place until mid-2005.
