The Minister for Transport, Jacinta Allan has announced the new board for V/Line from Bendigo, Ms Jenny Dawson former director of Bendigo and Adelaide Bank and current director of Sandhurst Trustees is to chair the board.
Mr Paul Westcott, Geelong Branch Convenor of the PTUA, appears to be exceptionally informed, when he highlighted the problems of the Ballarat line and the Regional Rail Link.
Mr Westcott also indicated in his interview with the Bendigo Advertiser (Thurs 2 July 2015) ' The reintroduction of passenger services between Castlemaine and Maryborough, linking to Ballarat was an ongoing issue for V/Line and the government, but it would require a complete track reconstruction.'
It is refreshing and a positive move by Mr Westcott to have an elevated view of the possibilities of reintroducing services between Castlemaine and Maryborough. The RRA absolutely endorses this sentimentand will continue to advocate and lobby for the reintroduction of passenger services and freight rail from Bendigo Castlemaine Maryborough Ballarat Geelong Melbourne.
However, the rail line would not need to be reconstructed had politicians and governments of both Liberal and Labor had maintained the rail line, which they are both culpable and negligent in their duty and their collective responsibility to maintain the railway infrastructure of the state.
Mr Westcott's statement brings a considerable positive vision to V/Line, it will be important and a priority to see if his proposal is acknowledged and translated into action by the V/line Board.
It is also hoped that the new appointments to V/Line Board will consider the reintroduction of services to Leongatha, Portland, Dunkeld, Hamilton, Cobram, Horsham, Stawell, Dimboola, Nhill, Dunolly, Donald and all stations to Mildura!!
Internationally it is the era of railway development and expansion - in Australia it is the age of the whole sale sell off of rail infrastructure and contraction of rail lines and passenger and freight services by political parties and politicians, who have undervalued the potential of passenger and freight rail's sustainable contribution to the economic development of the country and to the respective states.
