Ms Dawson said it was too early for her to signal any areas for improvement at V/Line.
However, she said she was keen to maintain its presence in regional Victoria.
"It's a wonderful opportunity. I was very pleased to be asked to take on this role," she said.
"Obviously very early days for me but I am very much looking forward to getting my teeth into the role.
"I'd like V/Line to continue to maintain its essential and very much loved service that it provides to the regions.
"It does provide an essential service and my previous experience in regional development - everyone likes to see the train service in their town."
