Royal Mail is in talks with the freight arm of transport operator FirstGroup, which could see post being delivered by railway once more.
A spokesman for GB Railfreight, a unit of FirstGroup, confirmed yesterday that the company has been "in talks with Royal Mail about carrying mail by train and these talks are continuing".
Royal Mail had made the controversial decision to abandon the railway as a method of delivering post and use road and air transport instead.
