Closure of Newcastle rail stations not technically a closure of whole line, State Government lawyer says
Talks are being held to ramp up efforts to reopen a central west New South Wales rail freight line which has been lying dormant for several years.
The Young Shire Council has invited a consultant to a meeting to discuss what's required to reinstate the track between Blayney and Demondrille.
Earlier this year the State Government knocked back two tenders for the project because the companies did not meet certain criteria.
The Mayor of Young Brian Ingram said the consultant's input would be valuable to start lobbying the government again.
"It's to investigate and look at what it can be used for and the benefits to the community as a whole," Mayor Ingram said.
"You get the heavy vehicles off the roads, that's one of the greatest benefits.
"On the saving side, it's the saving for the farmers with the grain. It's a cheaper way of getting grain from one spot to another."
Mayor Ingram said this information would be vital to put more pressure the government.
"We'd quite like to get some more facts about costings and the possibility of what may be done with the line, and just be able to go back to the minister with more information and put it back on the table."
