COMMUTERS are being forced to disembark at the wrong station or wait for the next service with trains deliberately skipping stations an average 80 times a month.
In a move Sydney Trains admits inconveniences customers but is necessary to keep timetables accurate, figures obtained under the NSW GIPA Act show trains skipped stations 711 times during peak periods in the eight months to January.
The airport line stretching from Macarthur in the southwest to the inner west was the worst, with stations skipped 147 times, including 39 in October.
The Northern line via Macquarie is the second worst for station skipping.
The Northern via Macquarie line was the next worst performer, with stations skipped on 140 occasions.
January was the worst month for the Northern Line, with stations being skipped twice daily. The best-performing line was East Hills with just three occasions of stations being skipped.
State opposition transport spokeswoman Jodi McKay said the high rate of stations being skipped on the airport line was disturbing given many commuters would be catching trains to avoid traffic.
Peak-hour commuters shouldn’t have to watch their platforms whiz by on their way to and from work,” Ms McKay said.
“Commuters using the airport line to avoid the traffic mayhem nearby are those most likely to have their train fail to stop where it’s supposed to. If you want people to use public transport the service needs to be reliable.
“Watching your train fly by the platform is far from anyone’s idea of reliable.”
