Your new Jolimont/MCG tram stop
As part of the modernisation of Melbourne's tram network, Yarra Trams and Public Transport Victoria are renewing tram tracks and overhead wires on Whitehorse Road in Balwyn. Major works will take place between Weir Street and Banool Road.
Tram tracks on this section of Whitehorse Road are approximately 59 years old and require renewing. The renewed track will deliver a better road surface for motorists, cyclists and tram passengers, produce less tram noise due to potholes, broken rails and wheel squealing, and will be quicker to repair in the future due to the use of new semi resilient materials.
Preliminary work will begin on Sunday 29 May 2016 and continue until major works commence. These works will involve the unloading and pre-welding of rails in preparation for the track renewal. Some car parking will be removed on the north side of Whitehorse Road between Yerrin Street and Iramoo Street to facilitate the welding of rails. Whitehorse Road will remain open to motorists during this time.
Major work will occur on Whitehorse Road between Weir Street and Banool Road in Balwyn. Works will commence at 1:30am on Saturday 4 June 2016 and continue 24 hours a day until 5:00am Thursday 9 June 2016. Whitehorse Road will be closed to all motorists during this time.
Route 109 trams will be
affected. Tram replacement bus services will be in place for the
duration of the major work period. For details closer to the time,
refer to signage on the network or onboard brochures.
Whitehorse Road will be closed to motorists between Weir Street and Banool Road from 1:30am Saturday 4 June until 5:00am Thursday 9 June 2016. Detours will be in place for the duration of the works.
Access to driveways on Whitehorse Road between Weir Street and Banool Road will be severely restricted and all on street parking removed. Residents are advised to utilise parking within side streets to prevent heavy delays during this time.
The work zone will be fenced off for safety but footpaths will remain open to allow pedestrian access to all businesses and residences on Whitehorse Road.
Noise and dust
Associated noise and dust from machinery, vehicles and work crews is unavoidable but Yarra Trams will do all it can to keep this to a minimum. The noisiest work will occur between 6am and 10pm. However, there may be a need to conduct noisy work outside these hours to ensure that the work is completed by 5am Monday 30 May 2016.
Supporting the local
Yarra Trams is working closely with the City of Boroondara to minimise the impact of this work on the local community.
