There has been a positive outcome to initial negotiations between TranzMetro and the Greater Wellington Regional Council.
Topics for discussion have included the future of the service and possible major improvements to infrastructure and rolling stock.
Regional Council spokesman Andrew Cutler says Australian rail operator, Toll Holdings has indicated it wants to retain ownership of Wellington's commuter rail service.
However he says studies are to be carried out on several issues, including the possible refurbishment of units on the Johnsonville line.
