Commuters making their way home from Town Hall train station were forced to evacuate after a fire alarm set off just after 6pm on Thursday.
Emergency services were quick on scene as commuters were left confused at the situation.
Police say an automatic fire alarm near the light rail work precinct had caused the false alarm. The evacuations were called off a short time later.
Fire and Rescue NSW remain on scene to investigate the cause of the false alarm.
Sydney Trains said the disturbance may prevent commuters from tapping on and off their opal cards. They are urging people to log on their accounts to request fare adjustments if required.
