As part of the modernisation of Melbourne's tram network, Yarra Trams and Public Transport Victoria are rehabilitating tram tracks at the tram reserve near the Melbourne Zoo between Elliott Avenue and Poplar Road in Parkville.
The curved tracks within the work-zone are approximately 22 years old and require rehabilitation. The rehabilitated tracks will increase service reliability, safety and ride comfort for passengers.
Major work will occur at the tram tracks on the reserve between Elliott Avenue and Poplar Road. Works will commence at 12:01am on Saturday 21 October and will continue 24 hours a day until 5am Monday 23 October 2017.
Route 58 services will be affected from the first tram Saturday 21 October to the last tram Sunday 22 October.
For more details closer to the time, please see latest service changes
No roads will be closed. Traffic on Poplar Road will be managed during the project.
The work zone will be fenced off for safety. The pedestrian walkway across the tram tracks at Stop 25 State Netball Hockey Centre will be closed. A detour via Stop 24 Elliott Avenue will be in place to allow pedestrian access to all businesses located around the work zone.
Noise and dust
Associated noise and dust from machinery, vehicles and work crews is unavoidable but Yarra Trams will do all it can to keep this to a minimum. The noisiest work will occur between 4am and 10pm; however there may be a need to conduct noisy work outside these hours to ensure that the work is completed by 5am on Monday 23 October 2017.
We advise that this work is being performed in accordance with our obligations to Public Transport Victoria and is necessary to maintain a safe tram network as required by the Rail Safety Act 2006 (Vic).
