A number of Chennai-bound trains were delayed on Thursday morning after a fracture was detected on the railway line near Vaniyambadi railway station.
According to Southern railway officials, the rail fracture was spotted early Thursday. It was found on the line near the despatch signal.
An official said any problem with the track circuit was automatically indicated. “At 4 a.m. on Thursday, the system indicated that the track was down. The staff were informed and they checked the tracks immediately when they noticed it was cut,” he said.
Railway staff immediately took up work to restore the line. Four Chennai-bound trains — Yesvantpur-Muzaffarpur Express, Mangaluru Central to Chennai Central Express, Thiruvananthapuram Central-Chennai Central Express and Cheran Express — were stopped near Vaniyambadi station. The trains were delayed by two hours, an official said.
Meanwhile, rail traffic was regulated at Jolarpet railway station. After temporary restoration works were taken up, the trains were allowed to pass with speed restriction. The line was restored by 7.30 a.m. About 15 trains were cleared as the day progressed. The trains ran late by half an hour to one hour, officials said.
