The Greens plan for ‘Turn Up and Go’ public transport, would run trains and trams at least every 10 minutes from 6am to 9pm, 7 days a week.
The Parliamentary Budget Office has independently costed the proposal and found that increasing tram services would cost less than $40 million per year, whilst increasing train services would cost around $160 Million per year over the forward estimates.
Under the plan, commuters across 10 of Melbourne’s 16 metropolitan train lines would have increased services. Whilst commuters on 12 tram routes during the weekday and 17 tram routes on the weekend would have increased services.
The Victorian Greens are pushing for the Labor government to adopt the policy in the upcoming state budget.
As stated by Sam Hibbins MP, Victorian Greens spokesperson for Transport:
“The costings show the Greens policy to increase train and tram services is affordable and achievable.”
“At a time when congestion is growing on our streets, the Andrews Government has dropped the ball on increasing train and tram services.”
“For just a fraction of the cost one of Labor’s multi-billion dollar mega tollways, commuters would be able to throw away the timetable for ‘turn up and go’ frequent train or tram services across Melbourne.”
