A firm contract for Stadler to supply a further 26 multiple-units was signed by national railway SŽ on May 27, as an option on an order placed in April 2018.
The latest order is worth €151m excluding VAT, and covers 10 four-car 160 km /h Flirt EMUs equipped for 3 kV DC, 15 kV 16·7 Hz and 25 kV 50 Hz operation in Slovenia, Austria and Croatia, and 16 three-car 140 km/h Flirt DMUs. The firm order takes the total value of the orders placed with Stadler to €320m.
SŽ Chief Executive Dušan Mes said the renewal of the passenger fleet and renovation of the infrastructure were the most important factors in modernising the national railway network. The first of the Stadler units is scheduled to be delivered for testing in late 2019 ahead of entry into passenger service from October 2021. This will enable the withdrawal of Pafawag Class 311/315 EMUs, Fiat Class 813 DMUs and locomotive-hauled stock.
‘We are very pleased that the Slovenian state rail operator is expanding its fleet to a total of 52 trains’, said Zeljko Davidovic, Stadler’s Sales Manager for Central & Eastern Europe. ‘The procurement of a co-ordinated range of vehicles is exemplary and will make rail travel in Slovenia and neighbouring countries safer, more comfortable and more environmentally friendly.’
SŽ is also preparing a strategic plan for the development of passenger services to 2031. Plans to put rail at the heart of an integrated transport system would include the construction of park-and-ride facilities and electric car rental for onward transport to the user’s destination. The main passenger station in Ljubljana would be modernised as a multimodal passenger terminal.
