This is the design that I have decided will be most likely be built. They say no battle plan survives the first shot, so it is probable that I will end up modifying it once I start building.
There were several other ideas that clearly I liked including the Fairmont Belt Line and the Virginian layout, but I know the WM a bit better, I discovered that I still own some WM equipment from 15 years ago (I remember how well those Stewart F7s ran) and the GC&E branch is appealing to me.
There are also new WM engines coming soon, including state-of-the-art F7 and RS3.
This line started as narrow gauge and has a narrow gauge feel with very sharp curves despite running F7s and RS3s. I could easy go back and run steam, if I can find the WM brass 2-8-0's needed. I began the hobby as a narrow gauger so that is factor. The plan does require a bunch of curved turnouts and I don't know how easy it will be to acquire the needed Walther's turnouts for example. I know how to hand lay track, but it isn't my favorite aspect of the hobby. I did make a few changes including a non-prototypical run around track at Webster Springs. I will likely include some of the ideas for operation that have been discussed in MRH including locked turnouts and gates to slow down operation.
As always thoughts about the plan and potential flaws are appreciated. Future blog entries will likely be about the joys of building benchwork in an attic room with 45 degree sloped ceilings.
