Rolling stock manufacturers Alstom and the joint collaboration between Hitachi and Bombardier have unveiled their respective proposed train designs for the HS2 project in the UK.
Alstom has placed a solo bid for the £2.75bn contract that involves manufacturing and delivery of at least 54 trains, which will operate on Phase 1 of HS2 between London and the West Midlands.
Hitachi and Bombardier have placed a joint proposal for a rolling stock contract. Other bidders in the fray are Siemens Mobility, Talgo and CAF.
Alstom’s proposed train is designed to meet all HS2 requirements. In a statement, the French company said that the model will be equally comfortable on the conventional network, as well as the HS2 infrastructure.
Alstom has already designed Avelia high-speed trains for the US, France and Italy.
The Hitachi and Bombardier have also released the first images of the proposed train design.
Recently, Bombardier and Hitachi have won a $643m order from Italian rail operator Trenitalia to deliver 14 Frecciarossa 1000 high-speed trains.
After assessing the bid applications, HS2 is expected to award the contract early next year.
In addition to London, Birmingham, Manchester and Leeds, HS2 services will connect several places beyond the core HS2 network, including York, Newcastle, Liverpool, Glasgow and Edinburgh.
Last month, the Economic Affairs Committee of the House of Lords urged the government to restrict the growing costs of building the HS2 project.
