But given the time Australian governments traditionally take to finish roads and railways, this new project will likely seem to take as long to build as the Snowys. Not the hydro-electric project, the mountains.
Only 20 per cent of long-distance freight on the eastern seaboard goes by rail. And when did anybody not travelling on a pensioner discount catch an inter-capital train?
Without better roads – and just as important, vastly improved rail links, especially on the east coast – Australia's freight system will grind to a halt.
