Inland rail a trifecta for Toowoomba region: mayor
Victorian Transport Minister Peter Batchelor says the Federal Government's promised $20 million for rail standardisation between Geelong and Mildura is only the beginning of the project.
Mr Batchelor says he wants to set up a joint state and federal team to assess the full cost of the project, after the funding was announced in yesterday's AusLink plan.
He says standardisation plans will still be affected by the sale of the company that currently leases the freight rail lines.
"The other determining factor, of course, with the standardisation both of the north-east and of the north-west of the line to Mildura is going to be what happens with the track ownership and that's the subject of a conditional sale proposal between Freight Australia and Pacific National," he said.
