POLICE patrols and surveillance have been increased near railway stations in Brimbank and Maribyrnong during Operation Spoon.
Police say commuters can also help prevent armed robberies by: keeping items such as mobile phones and wallets out of sight; not walking alone where possible; Organising to be picked up from stations; and staying in well-lit areas.
They say victims of armed robberies should: do exactly as the offender says; avoid sudden actions and explain any necessary movements; speak only when spoken to; take mental notes of the offender's description such as scars and tattoos, weapons used, mode of getaway; and phone 000 as soon as it is safe to do so.
The Federation of Indian Associations of Victoria offers support and information on a range of issues, including personal safety, for newly-arrived Indian students.
