What is to be done with the old narrow gauge (NG) line? The new standard gauge (SG) line roughly parallels the old line.
1 * Keep sections of old NG line where old stations are not directly served by the new SG line. Break of Gauge at junctions undesirable.
2 * Convert certain sections of old line and old stations to SG using old light rails. To be operated by lightweight SG locomotives. Can old NG steel(?) sleepers be reused. If needs be, built extra SG stations where new SG connecting lines meet SG railway.
3 * * Sell any decent NG rolling stock to other NG railways in other countries?
4 * Serve old stations with road vehicles and containerisation, with selective improvements to roads.
5 * * Leave this business to "Flexible" Road transport operators, as traffic on NG line is modest, and will reduce in future.
6 * Convert parts of new SG to Dual Gauge. A bit late for this; should have been thought of in the first place.
7 * * Parts of the Australian so-called Inland railway is Dual Gauge, and lightweight tracks on branches to be upgraded with, say, heavier rails.
8 * With modern CTC signalling junctions of old and new lines can be placed anywhere. Not convenient if junctions cannot be located at stations.
9 * Keep all/most of old NG line, with incremental upgrades.
