A local government leader says grain handler GrainCorp must be prepared to invest to get a Mallee railway line upgraded.
The Yarriambiack Shire is hoping the Hopetoun rail line can be upgraded so mineral sands from the Mallee can be carried by rail to south-west Victoria.
GrainCorp has dumped the Hopetoun line this harvest, but says if the track is upgraded it would be more attractive.
But the Wimmera Regional Transport Group's Darryl Argall says GrainCorp will have to invest before the Government will upgrade the line.
"The AWB grain centre in Dimboola can load 1,100 tonnes an hour on to a train. Now none of the GrainCorp services can do that, so they need to get their act together and upgrade them as soon as possible because I don't think the Government's going to put in the rail infrastructure until the outloading infrastructure is in," he said.
