Plans by mining company Iluka to transport mineral sands from the Mallee to south-west Victoria could generate jobs in the region.
The Yarriambiack Shire says Iluka is considering using the Hopetoun rail line to transport material mined at Ouyen to its separation plant at Hamilton.
Yarriambiack Mayor Andrew McLean says if the rail line is upgraded, Iluka could build a new depot at Hopetoun to pack the mineral sands into freight containers which would be good news for the town.
"Hopefully there's more job prospects there and possibly they'd have to build a depot, which is quite a few million dollars worth of infrastructure, I believe, to do the works," he said.
