Inland rail a trifecta for Toowoomba region: mayor
Australasian Railway Association chief Brian Nye says the line between Katherine and Wyndam could provide a major boost to agriculture in the East Kimberley region.
Mr Nye was speaking to delegates at a railway engineering conference being held in Darwin.
Mr Nye says the Ord River scheme has always been touted as the supermarket of Asia.
He says one of the problems is how to move the produce efficiently.
"A railway line that's been built from Adelaide to Darwin it's not much of a link for that far," he said.
"It's just thinking beyond the box today to think, well where can you go in the future, and using what they've done overseas, putting the railway lines in and developing the industries around it."
