The Australian Rail Track Corporation (ARTC) says it is spending billions of dollars on the Hunter Valley's coal chain network in a bid to get freight off the region's roads.
A new infrastructure report card by Engineers Australia has found the rail network has performed well under the ARTC's management.
But the report's authors say it is crucial there is even more investment in rail.
ARTC spokesman Brad Emery says the Corporation is well aware that more needs to be done.
"ARTC's investing a lot of money and the Federal Government's, through ARTC equity, invested quite a bit of money to foster the resurgence in freight rail to get more freight off roads and onto rail," he said.
"We know that one 1,500 metre train can replace about 100 trucks so it's important that we continue this resurgence in freight rail in the national interest."
Report author Ian Pedersen says he is recommending that planning start now for a very fast train link that connections Melbourne, Sydney, Newcastle and Brisbane.
"[It should be] brought onto the agenda now, not in 10 or 20 years time, because such a transport system would ease the load on Sydney Airport," he said.
"There's a lot of people travelling, who over a 3 or 4 hour period, would quite happily travel on a very fast train rather than go to the airport, wait, fly, wait and all the rest of it."
