EVEN heavy rail should be considered in viability studies for rail in Bondi, Mayor John Wakefield said.
“Any studies need to look at the potential of extending the existing heavy rail route from Bondi Junction, down under Birriga Rd and should terminate near the Rose Bay Golf course to minimise negative impacts on the Bondi Basin,” Cr Wakefield said.
He would not want to see heavy rail extended to Bondi Beach.
But he is not optimistic that either light or heavy rail will be taken seriously as options for development by the state government, particularly as this would undermine the financial viability of Sydney Buses’ Bondi Beach routes.
“This is Sydney Buses’ most profitable route. It subsidises a lot of the functionality of Sydney Buses operations elsewhere,” he said.
But Cr Wakefield said buses come to Bondi at a very high environmental cost.
“They have a fairly strong impact on the urban environment, they’re noisy, they’re polluting,” he said.
Cr Betts said any discussion about a Birriga Rd tunnel would need to start with the council that controls the area, Woollahra Council.
