Closure of Newcastle rail stations not technically a closure of whole line, State Government lawyer says
Sydney's North West Rail Link will include a 4km skytrain and two extra stations under plans lodged by the NSW government.
NSW Premier Barry O'Farrell on Monday unveiled plans for the 23km rail line through northwest Sydney, which is expected to cost somewhere between $7.5 and $8.5 billion, and be completed in around a decade.
The government's first definitive plans for the line, promised at the March election, include two additional stations at Cudgegong Road and Bella Vista - taking the total number to eight - and 1000 new commuter car parks.
It also includes 15km of tunnelling, and what has been dubbed a "futuristic" 4km skytrain between Bella Vista and Rouse Hill.
The plans will be lodged with the planning department for approval, and the government will now seek input from the private sector on how the line will be built.
Mr O'Farrell said the project was "as important to Sydney as the Harbour Bridge was".
NSW Transport Minister Gladys Berejiklian said the line would not only benefit those living in the northwest, but the whole of Sydney, by taking traffic off the road.
"Once this rail is up and built people in the northwest will have the option to jump on the train," Ms Berejiklian said.
"It will also mean that all of us who don't live in the north west will have relief in the CBD and other parts of Sydney because there are so fewer cars on the road."
Sydney Business Chamber executive director Patricia Forsythe said the project would reduce transport congestion.
"(It) is one of Sydney's missing pieces of infrastructure that has long been promised but never delivered," she said in a statement."
Mrs Forsythe welcomed the new station supporting the Norwest Business Park and said businesses could now think about relocating to the area.
"The additional 1000 car spaces at stations along the route supports the development of a 'park and ride' culture that should take some of the strain off our road network and make the North West Rail Link more attractive to commuters," she said.
Mrs Forsythe applauded the government's willingness to work with the private sector in the construction of the project.
