A COMMUTER train derailed and smashed into an apartment building in western Japan today, reportedly killing 16 people and injuring at least 185, public broadcaster NHK reported.
Other passengers were trapped inside the train cars, calling for help, news agencies reported.
Three carriages were derailed in the morning accident, which occurred when the train hit a car. One of the carriages then smashed into the side of an apartment building.
The accident occurred near the city of Osaka, about 400km west of Tokyo.
Television footage showed ambulances at the scene and rescuers with stretchers trying to remove people the derailed cars.
The front car of the train had smashed into the apartment building and the second and third cars were derailed.
