Closure of Newcastle rail stations not technically a closure of whole line, State Government lawyer says
The Australian Railway Group informed the drivers last week that they would be made redundant from this week.
The workers did get some allowance, extending their last day until November 26.
Workers told the Champion Post that ARG had a seven year contract to rail grain.
'But they told us that was over, that they were losing money each year, and that we had to go,' one worker said.
‘It means that unless the drivers can get work with Pacific National here, they will have to go out of town - possibly interstate - to get work.
‘What is strange is that the company only put four trainees on three months ago, and they were told they would still have a five year contract to run. They're now without a job.'
Another worker said he had moved to the area with his employment and had actually purchased a home.
