LIKE a scene straight out of the ABC TV satire, Utopia, the NSW Minister for Regional Tourism arrived in Bangalow yesterday to announce the NSW Government would be making an announcement in the future on rail trail funding.

"This (rail trail) proposal is far more advanced than any other I have seen and I think it is a leading contender to see funding in the future," Minister John Barilaro said.

Minister Barilaro said the Government's infrastructure strategy, announced on Tuesday, had identified $300 million for regional areas and he encouraged the Northern Rivers local councils and communities to plan ahead.

WORKS to the Kilkivan to Kingaroy section of the Rail Trail have been given the signal to go ahead with the allocation of $2 million to develop the multi-use track.

Deputy premier Jeff Seeney announced the grant at the former railway station in Murgon today.

"This project will complement the South Burnett's already strong reputation as an attractive bed and breakfast tourism destination for Brisbane residents and beyond," he said.

FUNDING for a rail trail from Casino to the Queensland border is poised to reinvigorate Northern Rivers tourism, the State Government has said.

A Newcastle Greens councillor is calling on the state government to fund an engineering study into turning an abandoned coalfields railway line into a major cycleway.

Michael Osborne says the 28-kilometre Richmond Vale rail trail between Hexham and Pelaw Main could become a significant tourist attraction.

The state government's announced funding for a similar study for the Northern Rivers rail trail on the far north coast.
